Scalable eShop for Weidmüller's digital future

Smart Industrial Connectivity: Electrification, automation, digitalisation, electrical connection technology and renewable energies - markets in which Weidmüller is at home. Founded in 1850, the family-owned company is represented in over 80 countries with production facilities and sales companies. As a global player in electrical connection technology, Weidmüller achieved a turnover of more than one billion euros in the 2023 financial year with around 6,000 employees worldwide - including around 2,000 at its headquarters in Detmold, in the centre of East Westphalia-Lippe.

Digitalisation at the top level

Weidmüller approached us during its digital transformation in order to take the next step towards future-oriented B2B solutions together. The challenge was not only to find creative approaches in the design, but also to implement them at the highest technological level. Together, we developed a customised eShop based on the SAP Commerce Cloud, which offers Weidmüller the flexibility and scalability it needs for its growing requirements. Following the successful launch, we are continuously supporting Weidmüller in further developments to ensure the eShop is always adapted to the latest market developments and customer needs.

Customised eShop for global markets

The project with Weidmüller involved a number of challenges and complex requirements. One of the central tasks was to seamlessly embed the new eShop into the existing, extensive SAP landscape, which had to ensure synchronous order management. This required not only technical know-how, but also a deep integration into the existing system architecture. In addition, the internationalisation of the eShop was a key focus: international rollouts in over 25 countries had to be planned and implemented, including the development of numerous features, some of which are country-specific, that were tailored to the different market requirements.

Another major challenge was to replace the existing online catalogue that was running in addition to the eShop. The aim was to expand the eShop so that in the future it would not only cover the current shop users, but also the previous catalogue users. For this, functions that were previously only available in the online catalogue had to be integrated into the eShop. These requirements made the project an exciting and challenging task, which we successfully implemented together.

Agile development and networked project management

The development and integration of a B2B eShop based on the SAP Commerce Cloud was achieved using agile methods such as Scrum and Kanban. This approach allowed us to flexibly respond to changing requirements and ensure optimal integration into Weidmüller's existing system landscape (SAP ERP, CRM and PIM database).

We additionally took on the coordination of various third-party service providers responsible for the operation, maintenance and security of the platform. We ensured that all external partners worked together seamlessly and efficiently to guarantee a smooth process through comprehensive project management. Furthermore, we supported Weidmüller in a consultative role, particularly in the areas of web analytics, live chat and consent management, to ensure that the eShop is not only technically flawless but also strategically optimally aligned with the needs of the market.

Growth and customer satisfaction for global B2B success

The result of our collaboration with Weidmüller is a constantly growing platform that is now successfully operating in more than 25 countries. With the eShop as a new distribution channel, we were able to achieve a high level of acceptance among B2B customers. We achieved this by responding to individual requests and special features that were tailored to the needs of our customers.
The customised features in particular are based on the specific user behaviour of B2B customers, while we ensured a user-friendly operation of the eShop across various end devices. This led to a high level of user satisfaction and efficient use of the new system.
